How to Land Entry Level Marketing Jobs

So you’re just coming out of school. Or maybe you’ve had a shift in your life and now you’re looking for a new career. Either way, this post will go over some of the easiest and most effective tips for landing entry level marketing jobs.

A quick note before we begin: as Lorem Finch is about all things content and copywriting, most of the tips outlined below will center around that. However, nearly all of these tips can be applied to any other job in the marketing industry. Let’s begin, shall we?

How to Find Remote Jobs for College Students

This can be a relatively tricky step in the job search process. For some, it can be the most stressful part. Doing a quick Google search will prove that there are so many ways to improve at job hunting. Below, I’m going to list my favorite techniques to simplify things and make the job hunting experience a little more streamlined.

Networking

This is one of the most valuable ways to begin your hunt for entry level marketing jbos. Networking allows you to meet people who work in the industry, learn about job openings, and gain insights about the marketing field. 

LinkedIn is one of my favorite ways to begin networking. Connecting with marketers, sharing posts, and engaging in conversations are simple but powerful techniques to help you as you begin to build your network.

Attending marketing events in your local area is another excellent way to meet professionals in the field. Strike up a conversation with them, then ask for a business card or LinkedIn profile to stay in touch. You never know how far a good impression can go when you’re hunting for entry level marketing jobs.

Internships

If you’re just out of college, and especially if it’s a technical college, many places will be discriminatory about who they hire. It makes sense, right? Most jobs only want to hire people who have experience in the industry. But what can you do to gain experience? Internships! 

Internships provide an opportunity to gain practical experience in the marketing industry. This can include working on real projects, developing marketing strategies, and implementing campaigns, all without a huge risk for the company! If they like you at the end of the internship, you just may have yourself a job. On the other hand, they could turn you down for full-time. If that’s the case, you’ll at least walk away with a ton more experience that you can use to pad out your resume.

If all else fails, remember that you’re not likely to be 100% qualified for any job listing. The key is to apply yourself where you feel is right and work from there. You never know when the interviewing process may surprise you.

How to Build a Writing Portfolio

Besides many jobs requiring them before the interview process, a writing portfolio is crucial to showcasing your skills and experience as a writer. 

You’ll want to start by narrowing down your niche. This could be anything from email marketing to product descriptions. Once you’ve done that, you can begin creating writing samples to build out your portfolio. Or, if you already have some experience writing for clients, feel free to include any of those. Just make sure you ask permission first.

After gathering your examples, you’ll want to find the best way to showcase them. There are many examples on the internet, but one of the most popular ways to display a writing portfolio is through a professional website. You could even include an about page to show people what you’re all about. Do your research on which platform you’d like to use and build (or hire someone to build) your website.

Writing Resources

If you’re planning on venturing down the freelance copywriting road, you’re probably feeling overwhelmed by the work you’ll have to put in. Fortunately, there are some amazing resources out there to help you as you begin searching for entry level marketing jobs.

Here are some of my personal favorite tools and resources as a copywriter:

  1. Udemy: Udemy is an online learning platform that offers a wide range of courses on copywriting. Some of the most popular courses include “Copywriting secrets – How to write copy that sells“. If you’re looking for some less expensive, but still inclusive courses, Udemy is a great place to start.
  2. Google Docs: This one sounds silly on paper. Google Docs is a completely free online word processing tool that can be used to write and edit copy. It’s known and loved for making collaborations with clients and colleagues a breeze.
  3. Thesaurus.com: I’ve mentioned my love for thesauruses before. One of the easiest ways to spruce up a boring piece of copy is by simply replacing stale words with bright, new ones. Thesaurus.com makes this easy by helping you find the right words to convey your message.

Now that I’ve listed my favorite resources above, we’ll go over some of the less well-known, but still useful tools that can help you begin your copywriting journey.

  1. Grammarly: I’m sure you’ve heard of Grammarly’s success in the past, but that kind of clout doesn’t go without reason. Grammarly is primarily an online grammar and spell checker that helps you catch errors and improve your writing. Grammar and spelling errors can be absolutely fatal to some pieces of copy, so if you tend to struggle with this, I can’t recommend Grammarly enough.
  2. Copyblogger: Copyblogger is a popular blog and resource center for copywriting tips, strategies, and best practices. It’s a great starting point for beginner copywriters to hone their craft.
  3. Copy Posse: Marketing themselves as “The New School of Copywriters”, Copy Posse is a news center and copywriting school with an abundance of resources for writers who are new to the field. They even provide challenges and exercises for those looking to sharpen their skills.
